My studies in Cultural Heritage Science started at the University of Florence in 2000. In 2006 I began working on projects related to Color Science and Digital Imaging. At the Institute of Applied Physics in Florence (IFAC-CNR) my activity was focused on the non-invasive analysis of paintings with Fiber Optic Reflectance Spectroscopy and Hyper-Spectral Reflectance Imaging.
In 2010 I started the PhD project at the Imaging & Media Lab in Basel, where I designed an optical setup for the digital restoration of photographs and motion-picture films. In 2012, as an intern at the Image Permanence Institute in Rochester, NY, I have been asked to develop specific illumination and imaging techniques to effectively highlight decay phenomena of photographic film (filmcare.org).
From 2013 to 2014 I was a teaching assistant at the University of Basel for the seminar “Historical Photography and Darkroom”, and periodically collaborated with the research project DIASTOR, analyzing important archival film sources.
For two years (2014–2016) I have been a postdoc fellow in Imaging Science at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, designing spectral imaging methodologies for works of art. The most relevant results were achieved for virtual cleaning of Old Master paintings and for the micro-spectroscopic analysis of color films in thin-section.
Together with a group of film enthusiasts in 2014 I founded 8mmezzo, an association for the recovery and preservation of home movies in Tuscany.
Today I have the privilege to be a part of a group of knowledgeable people, exploring a research field of extreme interest.
